Earthquake statistics

Number of quakes per year

Note:
The apparent increase in the number of quakes is not because global seismic activity has increased, but because the number of seismic networks around the world and their sensitivity to detect smaller quakes has been constantly increasing.
This is most evident if one looks at the number of smaller earthquakes (below magnitude 5). For larger quakes (magnitude 5 or more), the effect disappears after around the 1990s. Since then, the global coverage of earthquake of larger quakes has been nearly complete.

Average number of earthquakes

Based on data from the past 54 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 22.1 quakes on average per year near Veniaminof volcano:
  • Mag. 4 or higher: 0.02 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 55.6 years)
  • Mag. 3 or higher: 1.14 quakes per year
  • Mag. 2 or higher: 2.6 quakes per year
  • Mag. 1 or higher: 8.7 quakes per year

Veniaminof volcano (United States) - Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report for 12 May-18 May 2021 (Continuing Activity)

No eruptive activity at Veniaminof had been recorded in seismic or infrasound data since early April. On 12 May AVO changed both the Aviation Color Code and Volcano Alert Level to Unassigned, noting that several seismic station outages impeded the ability to detect seismic unrest at the volcano. Monitoring was ongoing based on the utilization of the remaining seismic stations, the regional infrasound networks, the detection of lightning, and satellite image monitoring. ... Read all
