Background
The basaltic Big Bunchgrass pyroclastic cone was considered to be of Holocene age (Sarna-Wojcicki et al. 1983, Smith 1988). The age assignment of Smith was based on lack of observation of Mazama tephra at Big Bunchgrass, but Sherrod (1995 pers. comm.) has found overlying Mazama tephra, and considers Big Bunchgrass to be substantially older than Holocene based on degree of erosion.---
