Bogoslof volcano (Aleutian Islands): new explosion, ash plume to 35,000 ft

Another brief, but violent explosion occurred at the volcano two hours ago, in the early afternoon local time (13:24 AKST or 22:24 GMT).
It only lasted about 5 minutes, but produced an ash plume that reached 35,000 ft (12 km) altitude and was also spotted by pilots en route nearby.
The volcanic cloud moved north from the volcano.
The Aviation Color Code remains at RED (after it had temporarily been lowered to ORANGE earlier) as "additional explosive events at Bogoslof may occur without warning", the Alaska Volcano Observatory stressed.
