A sudden steam-driven explosion (phreatic eruption) occurred yesterday from the Sileri crater in the Dieng volcanic complex, injuring several people. According to BNPB (Civil Protection), 17 people suffered mostly minor injuries (burns, fractures, cuts) and at least 10 were transported to a hospital.
The eruption occurred at 11:54 local time and ejected a column of steam, gasses and mud which fell in up to 50 m distance from the crater.
As typical for this kind of explosions, there is little to no warning: they are triggered by complex interactions in the shallow hydrothermal system that lead to a mass of pressurized fluids (mainly water) become overheated and to suddenly flash into steam. In the case of yesterday, a warning had been in place since late June not to approach the crater within 100 m, as degassing activity at the Sileri crater had been elevated for some time; a day before the eruption, park rangers had noticed particular intense activity, with a dense column of steam rising 40 m.
However, there have been no other signs of unusual activity detected in seismic and other monitoring data and the official alert level of the Dieng volcano has been at the lowest (1, normal, on a scale of 1-4). Such phreatic explosions are considered to be a normal phenomenon of this volcano with a particularly and continuously active hydrothermal system.
Access to the area has been temporarily closed.
A similar, but larger eruption had occurred at the Sileri crater on 27 September 2009 affecting an area of 100 meters radius.

Sadly, the eruption claimed indirect victims: A rescue helicopter crashed just minutes before arriving at the scene, killing all 8 people on board.
