Ten years after Fukushima was hit by the major magnitude 9 earthquake of 11 March 2011, followed by a devastating tsunami and the breakdown of nuclear facilities, today's strong earthquake in almost the same spot hit with a magnitude of 7.1, considered very strong by earthquake standards.
Luckily there was no tsunami warning and giant waves that were seen ten years ago. This quake however did cause injuries to dozens of people according to the country's Kyodo news agency. The quake left hundreds of thousands of homes without electricity and disrupted train services, with reports of a landslide blocking a highway in Fukishima.

One report to our earthquake monitoring service called the quake "by far the biggest one of these last few years" and reported strong shaking. Other reports listed objects falling off shelves, broken glass, pets reacting and alarms going off. The quake woke many people up and was felt in most of central and north Japan, including Katsushika, Kawasaki, Misawa, Nagoya, Sapporo, Tokyo, Yokosuka and many other locations.

While the quake was alarming, there is huge relief that it was not a repeat of ten years ago with a tsunami, thousands of deaths and enormous damage. Many aftershocks were reported but were less in intensity than the main event.
