Strong mag. 6.4 earthquake - CROATIA on Tuesday, 29 December 2020 at 11:19 (GMT) - information

Very strong mag. 6.4 Earthquake - Petrinja, Central Croatia, on Tuesday, Dec 29, 2020, at 12:19 pm (Zagreb time)

A very strong magnitude 6.4 earthquake hit 5.4 km (3.3 mi) away from Sisak, Sisak-Moslavina,  Croatia, around noon of Tuesday, Dec 29, 2020 at 12.19 pm local time (Europe/Zagreb GMT +1). The quake had a very shallow depth of 10 km (6 mi) and was felt over a large region. The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would.

Fatalities and economic damage

The earthquake caused some fatalities (8 in total) and injuries, while damage to buildings and infrastructure was catastrophic in the areas near the epicenter.

This was the 2nd worst quake in Croatia during recorded history and the 5th most fatal quake in 2020.

At least 7 people killed and 26 injured

Revised shake map published by reliefweb
Revised shake map published by reliefweb
A day after the catastrophic quake hit Croatia, there is still no full picture of its total damage. Sadly, the preliminary death toll now stands at 7 dead, including a 12-year-old girl and 6 men, according to latest news.
In addition, 6 people were reported to have suffer severe and 20 people light injuries by the quake.
Material damage is enormous, with many destroyed or damaged buildings and structures in towns near the epicenter, especially Petrinja and Sisac. In those areas, the ground shaking reached values of almost 8 on the Mercalli Scale, classified as "severe" with the potential to cause extensive damage.
Almost 100 aftershocks have already been recorded, including 6 tremors of magnitudes 4-4.8, and many more are likely still to follow. The bigger ones are especially dangerous as they add damage to already weakened structures and can cause additional collapse.
Hundreds of people evacuated from their homes are being transferred to makeshift shelters, hotels and other temporary accommodation in the wider area.
Update Tue, 29 Dec 2020, 14:42

Aftershocks and worries about more quakes in the area

The first aftershocks have started to rattle the area. During the first two hours since the mainshock, there were 5 quakes of magnitudes 3+ and one 4.4 tremor, all being felt.
Many more aftershocks are likely to follow in the coming hours, days, even weeks, and likely some of them might reach dangerous magnitudes around 5.

Scientists at Croatia's Seismological Service fear that the recent quakes might indicate that a larger fault system in the area has now been activated, and that other large quakes could occur in different areas in a near future as well.
"We have more epicentral areas. The African plate is pushing our plate and those tensions are so strong that there is a large amount of energy being released," the head of the Seismological Center said.

Additional info

Ref #1053:
Tectonic Summary
The December 29, 2020 earthquake near Petrinja, Croatia, occurred as a result of shallow strike-slip faulting within the Eurasia Plate. Focal mechanism solutions for the event indicate that rupture occurred on a nearly vertical fault striking either to the southeast or southwest. The location and depth of the event indicate that this was an intraplate earthquake occurring within the Eurasia plate as opposed to along a major tectonic boundary.
Tectonics of the Mediterranean Sea, in the convergent boundary region between Africa and Eurasia, are complex, and involve the motions of numerous microplates and regional-scale structures. The Adriatic block immediately west of today's earthquake is thought to move somewhat independently to Eurasia and Africa, driving surrounding faulting in Italy and along the eastern Adriatic coast from Croatia to Albania.
This is the largest earthquake to occur in Croatia since the advent of modern seismic instrumentation. It was preceded by two sizeable foreshocks, a magnitude 4.7 and a magnitude 5.2 on December 28. About one in twenty earthquakes have foreshocks. An earthquake of similar size to the recent M6.4 occurred in 1880 near Zagreb and there have been three magnitude 6 and larger earthquakes within 200 km of the December 29, 2020 earthquake since 1900. Recently a M5.6 earthquake occurred on November 27, 1990, 175 km to the southeast which injured 10 people.

Ref #12823:
earthquake in central Croatia that killed seven people and destroyed scores of homes and other buildings [...] As well as the seven killed, 26 were injured, including six who are seriously wounded, officials said [...] In the village of Majske Poljane, where five of the people died, the vast majority of the houses were completely destroyed.

Ref #1250:
1 bn USD in damage, 7 deaths, 24 injured

Ref #12840:
Eight people died, including a 13-year-old girl from Petrinja; 36 persons have been injured, and 30 persons saved from rubbles.
There has been widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure. So far, authorities have received more than 46,000 reports of damaged buildings. The initial assessment confirmed that there are at least 1,500 families near Sisak, Petrinja and Glina who have lost their homes as a result of the earthquake. 9 school buildings are unusable due to the severe damage, 12 are temporarily unusable and could be reconstructed, 12 are usable with certain parts of buildings still posing a risk and 23 school buildings are usable without limitations. Healthcare facilities in Petrinja and Glina are unsalvageable.

Ref# 13304:
8 people were killed and at least 36 people were injured. The Government estimated direct damages on public and residential buildings as well as infrastructure at 4,8 billion EUR (CHF 4,92 billion)
Buildings: 4,617 were classified as uninhabitable and 8,165 as temporarily uninhabitable – a total of 12,782.

What is Intensity and the Mercalli Intensity Scale?

The amount of shaking that occurs on the surface due to an earthquake is called the intensity. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.
Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.

Earthquake statistics

Average number of earthquakes

Based on data from the past 14 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 556 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):
  • Mag. 6 or higher: 0.03 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 31.3 years)
  • Mag. 5 or higher: 0.24 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 4.1 years)
  • Mag. 4 or higher: 2.6 quakes per year
  • Mag. 3 or higher: 30 quakes per year
  • Mag. 2 or higher: 188 quakes per year (or 15.7 quakes per month)
  • Mag. 1 or higher: 532 quakes per year (or 44 quakes per month)
The area where this quake occurred has a high level of seismic activity. It has had at least 4 quakes above magnitude 6 since 1900, which suggests that larger earthquakes of this size occur infrequently, probably on average approximately every 30 to 35 years.

Number of quakes per year

Previous quakes in the same area of this earthquake

Strongest in 93 years

The earthquake was the strongest to hit this part of  Croatia in over 93 years. Earlier, the last quake of equal or greater strength near the present epicenter had been a magnitude 7.0 earthquake on Sunday, Aug 14, 1927, at 09:45 pm local time (Europe/Ljubljana GMT +2) in 168 km (105 mi) distance to the west:
Mag. 7.0 earthquake Notranjsko-kraška - Osrednjeslovenska, Slovenia - Aug 14, 1927 -
Below is a list and map of (larger or recent) quakes that had occurred near the area of the epicenter before this earthquake (within up to 100 km/61 mi distance, up to 300 km/183 mi for very large quakes above mag. 7). Filter the list to limit the number to show, by magnitude or time before.
