The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency, which listed it as a magnitude 6.3 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 6.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been felt by everybody in the area of the epicenter. In those areas, dangerous ground shaking occurred with the potential to inflict moderate to heavy damage to buildings and other infrastructure.
Towns or cities where the quake likely caused strong ground shaking include
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Digos (pop. 116,100) located 14 km from the epicenter, and Kidapawan (pop. 79,700) 30 km away.
In Davao City (pop. 1,212,500) located 53 km from the epicenter, Malita (pop. 41,100) 59 km away, Samal (pop. 43,500) 62 km away, Panabo (pop. 84,700) 77 km away, and Budta (pop. 1,273,700) 99 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.

What is Intensity and the Mercalli Intensity Scale?

The amount of shaking that occurs on the surface due to an earthquake is called the intensity. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.
Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.

Earthquake statistics

Average number of earthquakes

Based on data from the past 14 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 1,000 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):
  • Mag. 7 or higher: 0.02 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 41.7 years)
  • Mag. 6 or higher: 0.51 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 1.9 years)
  • Mag. 5 or higher: 5.2 quakes per year
  • Mag. 4 or higher: 42 quakes per year (or 3.5 quakes per month)
  • Mag. 3 or higher: 208 quakes per year (or 17.3 quakes per month)
  • Mag. 2 or higher: 872 quakes per year (or 73 quakes per month)
  • Mag. 1 or higher: 1,000 quakes per year (or 2.8 quakes per day)
The area where this quake occurred has a very high level of seismic activity. It has had at least 3 quakes above magnitude 7 since 1900, which suggests that larger earthquakes of this size occur infrequently, probably on average approximately every 40 to 45 years.

Number of quakes per year

Previous quakes in the same area of this earthquake

The earthquake occurred 22 weeks after a magnitude 6.4 earthquake had hit on Sunday, Sep 6, 2020, at 11:23 pm local time (Asia/Manila GMT +8) in 71 km (44 mi) distance to the southeast:
Mag. 6.4 earthquake Philippine Sea, Davao Occidental, Davao - Sep 6, 2020 -

The largest quake near the epicenter of this quake during the 10 years before was an event of magnitude 7.0. It had occurred 2 years earlier, on Saturday, Dec 29, 2018, at 11:39 am (GMT +8) in Philippine Sea,  Philippines:
Mag. 7.0 earthquake Philippine Sea, Davao Oriental, Davao - Dec 29, 2018 -
The strongest-ever (since 1900) recorded quake in this area measured magnitude 8.3. It had occurred 106 years ago earlier, on Thursday, Aug 15, 1918, at 12:18 pm local time (universal GMT +0) in Soccsksargen,  Philippines:
Mag. 8.3 earthquake Celebes Sea, 143 km southwest of Koronadal, Soccsksargen - Aug 15, 1918 -

Below is a list and map of (larger or recent) quakes that had occurred near the area of the epicenter before this earthquake (within up to 100 km/61 mi distance, up to 300 km/183 mi for very large quakes above mag. 7). Filter the list to limit the number to show, by magnitude or time before.
