Strong Fukishima quake did not trigger tsunami this time
User reports of the magnitude 7 quake in Japan this evening (13 Feb 2021)
User reports of the magnitude 7 quake in Japan this evening (13 Feb 2021)
Ten years after Fukushima was hit by the major magnitude 9 earthquake of 11 March 2011, followed by a devastating tsunami and the breakdown of nuclear facilities, today's strong earthquake in almost the same spot hit with a magnitude of 7.1, considered very strong by earthquake standards.
Luckily there was no tsunami warning and giant waves that were seen ten years ago. This quake however did cause injuries to dozens of people according to the country's Kyodo news agency. The quake left hundreds of thousands of homes without electricity and disrupted train services, with reports of a landslide blocking a highway in Fukishima.

One report to our earthquake monitoring service called the quake "by far the biggest one of these last few years" and reported strong shaking. Other reports listed objects falling off shelves, broken glass, pets reacting and alarms going off. The quake woke many people up and was felt in most of central and north Japan, including Katsushika, Kawasaki, Misawa, Nagoya, Sapporo, Tokyo, Yokosuka and many other locations.

While the quake was alarming, there is huge relief that it was not a repeat of ten years ago with a tsunami, thousands of deaths and enormous damage. Many aftershocks were reported but were less in intensity than the main event.

Big quake in Japan, no tsunami alert!
According to the U.S. Tsunami Warning System, there is no threat of a tsunami from today's magnitude 7.2 earthquake in the Pacific 89 km southeast of Sendai, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan.
We hope that they are right as earthquakes of this size can trigger tsunamis. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency JMA, no tsunami should be expected either, only slight changes in sea level.

It is interesting to note that today's quake occurred in almost the same location as the catastrophic Tohoku earthquake from 11 March 2011. In fact, it is likely a late aftershock.

Tokyo to Bunkyo ku / Moderate shaking (MMI V) / horizontal (sideways) swinging : I live on the tenth floor and you could feel the entire building shaking from side to side. Furniture squeaking. Flimsy ikea shelves shaking from side to side looked like they are gonna cave in at any moment. Walking around the apartment was still possible though. I was not in the epicentre of the quake but it was still a pretty unpleasant experience. Occasional earthquakes are normal for those who live in Tokyo but this time (Feb 13th around 23:00) it was the worst I’ve ever experienced. I do | 19 users found this interesting.
  • I hope that you are not too shaken! Love

We stayed under our covers (for protection) moving nearer the walls until the shaking stopped and then immediately looked up the Japanese Weather Agency's Earthquake and Tsunami warning service which reported there was no tsunam | 14 users found this interesting.
