Major mag. 8.2 Earthquake - Chignik Earthquake, Gulf of Alaska, on Wednesday, Jul 28, 2021, at 09:15 pm (GMT -9)

A powerful magnitude 8.2 earthquake occurred in the Gulf of Alaska 78 km (48 mi) from  United States in the evening of Wednesday, Jul 28, 2021 at 9.15 pm local time (GMT -9). The quake had a very shallow depth of 32 km (20 mi) and was felt over a large region. The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would.

The earthquake's powerful seismic waves traveled the globe and were recorded by seismic stations access.
Attached is an example how the quake showed up on a seismogram from a monitoring station at Mt. Etna volcano in Sicily, more than 9000 km (5600 mi) away.
Fortunately, the quake did not result in any reported significant damage, thanks to its remote location and distance from inhabited placed. Here's a video showing how shaking occurred inside a house in Cold Bay:

Largest quake in the U.S. in 50 years
This morning's quake (or yesterday evening's, as it struck at 10:15 pm Alaska time on 28 July), was the largest earthquake recorded in the U.S. in 50 years. It is now called the "Chignik Earthquake".
No significant tsunami
At an intermediate depth of approximately 28.5 miles is was an intermediate-depth earthquake, and fortunately only resulted in a very small and not dangerous tsunami - things could have easily be different had the quake occurred at shallower depth as originally feared.

It occurred relatively close (about 45 miles) to the location of the M7.6 Simeonof Island Earthquake on 21 July 2020; according to the Alaska Earthquake Center, these two large quakes seem to be related. Both occurred along the boundary where the Pacific ocean plate slides (subducts) beneath the North America plate:
"The Alaska Peninsula is a seismically active region where thousands of earthquakes occur each year. The largest earthquakes are located along the interface, which is called the Aleutian megathrust. The M8.2 event ruptured this interface in the region between the Shumagin Islands to southwest and Kodiak Island to northeast. Previously, the 1938 M8.3 earthquake ruptured this section of the interface."

Tectonic Summary
The July 29, 2021, (July 28, 2021 local time) M8.2 earthquake southeast of Perryville, Alaska (south of the Alaska Peninsula), occurred as the result of thrust faulting on or near the subduction zone interface between the Pacific and North America plates. The preliminary focal mechanism solution indicates rupture occurred on a fault dipping either shallowly to the northwest, or steeply to the southeast. The location, mechanism and depth – and the large size of the event – are all consistent with slip occurring on the subduction zone interface between the two plates. At the location of this event, the Pacific plate converges with North America to the northwest at a rate of about 64 mm/yr, subducting at the Alaska-Aleutians trench ~125 km to the southeast of the earthquake.
While commonly plotted as points on maps, earthquakes of this size are more appropriately described as slip over a larger fault area. Reverse faulting events of the size of the July 29 earthquake are typically about 200x80 km in size (length x width).
Large earthquakes are common in the Alaska-Aleutian subduction zone. Since 1900, 8 other earthquakes M7 and larger have occurred within 250 km of the July 29, 2021 event, including earthquakes of M7.8 on July 22, 2020 (located 62 km west of the July 29, 2021 event) and M7.6 on October 19, 2020 (located 145 west of the July 29, 2021 event). Given the temporal and spatial proximity of the July 29, 2021 earthquake to the two previous large earthquakes in July and October 2020, those previous events were foreshocks of the July 2021 earthquake. An earthquake of M8.2 also occurred on November 10, 1938 within 40 km of the July 29, 2021 event. While initial information is incomplete, the July 29 earthquake may have ruptured partially or completely into the ruptured region of the 1938 earthquake.
The Alaska-Aleutian Trench also hosted the second largest earthquake recorded by modern seismic instrumentation, the M9.2 March 27 1964 earthquake, which ruptured to within about 250 km of this event, at the eastern end of the 1938 rupture area. The 1938 event produced a small tsunami that was recorded both locally and in Hilo, Hawaii. The remote location of the earthquake resulted in little impact to people and infrastructure.

What is Intensity and the Mercalli Intensity Scale?

The amount of shaking that occurs on the surface due to an earthquake is called the intensity. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.
Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.

Earthquake statistics

Average number of earthquakes

Based on data from the past 14 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 104 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):
  • Mag. 8 or higher: 0.02 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 62.5 years)
  • Mag. 7 or higher: 0.04 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 25 years)
  • Mag. 6 or higher: 0.14 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 7.3 years)
  • Mag. 5 or higher: 1.82 quakes per year
  • Mag. 4 or higher: 15.2 quakes per year
  • Mag. 3 or higher: 68 quakes per year (or 5.7 quakes per month)
  • Mag. 2 or higher: 98 quakes per year (or 8.2 quakes per month)
  • Mag. 1 or higher: 101 quakes per year (or 8.4 quakes per month)
The area where this quake occurred has a very high level of seismic activity. It has had at least 2 quakes above magnitude 8 since 1900, which suggests that larger earthquakes of this size occur infrequently, probably on average approximately every 60 to 65 years.

Number of quakes per year
