Major mag. 7.1 Earthquake - Philippine Sea, Philippines, 74 km southeast of Mati, Davao Oriental, Davao, on Thursday, Aug 12, 2021, at 01:46 am (GMT +8)

A powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake occurred in the Philippine Sea near the coast of  Philippines in the early morning of Thursday, Aug 12, 2021 at 1.46 am local time (GMT +8). The quake had a shallow depth of 63 km (39 mi) and was felt over a large region. The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would.

Magnitude 6.5 earthquake strikes near Mati, Davao Oriental, Davao, Philippines

6.5 quake 12 Aug 1:46 am (GMT +8)
6.5 quake 12 Aug 1:46 am (GMT +8)
The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 6.5 quake in the Philippines near Mati, Davao Oriental, Davao, only 11 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Thursday 12 August 2021 at 1:46 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 6.2. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency at magnitude 7.0, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 6.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Bobon (pop. 4,500) located 64 km from the epicenter, Tibanbang (pop. 7,800) 77 km away, Mati (pop. 105,900) 79 km away, Manay (pop. 20,300) 80 km away, Sigaboy (pop. 8,000) 81 km away, and San Isidro (pop. 9,700) 85 km away.
In Lupon (pop. 27,200) located 96 km from the epicenter, Davao City (pop. 1,212,500) 144 km away, Magugpo Poblacion (pop. 233,300) 149 km away, and Panabo (pop. 84,700) 150 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.

What is Intensity and the Mercalli Intensity Scale?

The amount of shaking that occurs on the surface due to an earthquake is called the intensity. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.
Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.

Earthquake statistics

Average number of earthquakes

Based on data from the past 14 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 858 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):
  • Mag. 8 or higher: 0.02 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 62.5 years)
  • Mag. 7 or higher: 0.09 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 11.4 years)
  • Mag. 6 or higher: 0.57 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 1.8 years)
  • Mag. 5 or higher: 7.9 quakes per year
  • Mag. 4 or higher: 66 quakes per year (or 5.5 quakes per month)
  • Mag. 3 or higher: 323 quakes per year (or 27 quakes per month)
  • Mag. 2 or higher: 825 quakes per year (or 69 quakes per month)
  • Mag. 1 or higher: 852 quakes per year (or 71 quakes per month)
The area where this quake occurred has a very high level of seismic activity. It has had at least 2 quakes above magnitude 8 since 1900, which suggests that larger earthquakes of this size occur infrequently, probably on average approximately every 60 to 65 years.

Number of quakes per year

Previous quakes in the same area of this earthquake

Strongest in 13 years

The earthquake was the strongest to hit this part of the  Philippines in over 13 years. Earlier, the last quake of equal or greater strength near the present epicenter had been a magnitude 7.2 earthquake on Thursday, Feb 12, 2009, at 01:34 am local time (Asia/Makassar GMT +8) in 293 km (182 mi) distance to the south:
Mag. 7.2 earthquake Philippine Sea, 47 km west of Pulau Kaburuang Island, North Sulawesi - Feb 12, 2009 -

The strongest-ever (since 1900) recorded quake in this area measured magnitude 8.1. It had occurred 100 years ago earlier, on Monday, Apr 14, 1924, at 04:20 pm local time (universal GMT +0) in Davao,  Philippines:
Mag. 8.1 earthquake Philippines, Davao Oriental, Davao - Apr 14, 1924 -

Below is a list and map of (larger or recent) quakes that had occurred near the area of the epicenter before this earthquake (within up to 100 km/61 mi distance, up to 300 km/183 mi for very large quakes above mag. 7). Filter the list to limit the number to show, by magnitude or time before.
