Major magnitude 7.2 earthquake in Haiti on Saturday, 14 August 2021 at 12:29 (GMT) - information

Major mag. 7.2 Earthquake - Departement de Nippes, 37 km northeast of Les Cayes, Sud, Haiti, on Saturday, Aug 14, 2021, at 08:29 am (Port-au-Prince time)

A powerful magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit 37 km (23 mi) away from Les Cayes, Sud,  Haiti, in the morning of Saturday, Aug 14, 2021 at 8.29 am local time (America/Port-au-Prince GMT -4). The quake had a very shallow depth of 10 km (6 mi) and was felt over a large region. The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would.

Fatalities and economic damage

The earthquake caused a very large number of fatalities (2,248 in total) and injuries, while damage to buildings and infrastructure was catastrophic in the areas near the epicenter.

This was the 3rd worst quake in Haiti during recorded history, the most fatal quake worldwide in 2021, the 3rd most deadly quake since 2020, and the 15th most distastrous quake of the 21st century.

Ref #1053:
Tectonic Summary
The August 14, 2021 M 7.2 Haiti earthquake occurred as the result of oblique reverse motion along the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault zone, ~125 km west of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. The earthquake occurred at shallow depths on either a reverse fault striking west and dipping to the north with a component of left-lateral slip, or a fault striking southeast and dipping to the southwest with a component of right-lateral slip. At the location of the earthquake, the local plate boundary is dominated by left-lateral strike slip motion and compression. The plate boundary in this location accommodates eastward, left-lateral motion of the Caribbean plate relative to the North America plate. Within this context, the earthquake likely occurred on the east-west striking, north dipping fault plane with a component of left-lateral slip [...]
The location and focal mechanism solutions of the August 2021 earthquake are consistent with the event resulting from primarily reverse faulting with a component of left-lateral strike slip faulting on the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault zone (EPGFZ). Overall, the EPGFZ accommodates about 7 mm/yr of motion, nearly half the total oblique convergence between the Caribbean and North America plates (~20 mm/yr). Haiti occupies the western part of the island of Hispaniola, one of the Greater Antilles Islands, situated between Puerto Rico and Cuba. At the location of the August 2021 earthquake, motion between the Caribbean and North America plates is partitioned between two major east-west-trending, strike slip fault systems—the Septentrional fault system in northern Haiti and the EPGFZ in southern Haiti.
The EPGFZ had produced a series of major earthquakes in both instrumental and historical time periods. In addition to the 2010 M 7 earthquake that devastated Port-au-Prince, the EPGFZ is the likely source of historical large earthquakes in 1860, 1770, and 1751, though none of these has been confirmed in the field as associated with this fault.

What is Intensity and the Mercalli Intensity Scale?

The amount of shaking that occurs on the surface due to an earthquake is called the intensity. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.
Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.

989 aftershocks for this quake

For this strong earthquake, 989 aftershocks have been detected so far. The strongest was a magnitude 5.7 quake that hit 15 hours after the mainshock in 60 km (37 mi) distance, in 28 km south of Jeremie, Grandans, Haiti, on Saturday, Aug 14, 2021 on 11:20 pm (Port-au-Prince local time GMT -4).
The most recent aftershock occurred 3 years ago Haiti Region and had a magnitude of 2.6.

What are aftershocks?

Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.
[More info]

What about this quake?

Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface of approx. 1,585 km2 (=612 sqare miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 69 km (43 mi).

Earthquake statistics

Average number of earthquakes

Based on data from the past 14 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 310 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):
  • Mag. 7 or higher: 0.02 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 62.5 years)
  • Mag. 6 or higher: 0.04 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 25 years)
  • Mag. 5 or higher: 1.72 quakes per year
  • Mag. 4 or higher: 20.1 quakes per year
  • Mag. 3 or higher: 187 quakes per year (or 15.6 quakes per month)
  • Mag. 2 or higher: 301 quakes per year (or 25.1 quakes per month)
  • Mag. 1 or higher: 310 quakes per year (or 25.8 quakes per month)
The area where this quake occurred has a high level of seismic activity. It has had at least 2 quakes above magnitude 7 since 1900, which suggests that larger earthquakes of this size occur infrequently, probably on average approximately every 60 to 65 years.

Number of quakes per year

Previous quakes in the same area of this earthquake

Strongest in 161 years

The earthquake was the strongest to hit this part of  Haiti in over 161 years. Earlier, the last quake of equal or greater strength near the present epicenter had been a magnitude 7.5 earthquake on Sunday, Apr 8, 1860, at 11:00 am in 18.2 km (11 mi) distance to the northeast:
Mag. 7.5 earthquake Caribbean Sea - Departement de Nippes, Haiti - Sunday, Apr 8, 1860, at 11:00 am -
Below is a list and map of (larger or recent) quakes that had occurred near the area of the epicenter before this earthquake (within up to 100 km/61 mi distance, up to 300 km/183 mi for very large quakes above mag. 7). Filter the list to limit the number to show, by magnitude or time before.
