Very strong magnitude 7.1 quake hits 71 km northwest of Luganville, Vanuatu in the evening

7.1 quake 18 Aug 9:10 pm (GMT +11)
7.1 quake 18 Aug 9:10 pm (GMT +11)
An intermediate magnitude 7.1 earthquake was reported in the evening near Luganville, Sanma Province, Vanuatu.
According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Wednesday 18 August 2021 at 9:10 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 84 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) which listed the quake at magnitude 6.7. Other agencies reporting the same quake include France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 6.4, Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency at magnitude 6.8, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 6.8, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 6.7.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Port-Olry (pop. 2,000) located 20 km from the epicenter, Luganville (pop. 13,400) 71 km away, Sola (pop. 1,200) 134 km away, Norsup (pop. 3,000) 137 km away, and Lakatoro (pop. 710) 141 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.

The closest larger town where the quake might have been felt is Santo, a town with 13,000 inhabitants in Vanuatu, in 74 km (46 mi) distance south of the epicenter. People likely experienced moderate shaking there. Several smaller towns and villages are located closer to the epicenter and might have experienced stronger shaking. In the capital of  Vanuatu, Port Vila, 345 km (214 mi) away from the epicenter, the earthquake was probably felt as light shaking.

What is Intensity and the Mercalli Intensity Scale?

The amount of shaking that occurs on the surface due to an earthquake is called the intensity. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.
Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.

4 aftershocks for this quake

For this strong earthquake, 4 aftershocks have been detected so far. The strongest was a magnitude 5.6 quake that hit 8 weeks after the mainshock in 41 km (25 mi) distance, in Vanuatu Islands on Thursday, Oct 14, 2021 on 04:51 pm (Efate local time GMT +11).
The most recent aftershock occurred 3 years ago 42 Km NE of Luganville, Vanuatu, and had a magnitude of 4.5.

What are aftershocks?

Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.
[More info]

What about this quake?

Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface of approx. 794 km2 (=307 sqare miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 49 km (30 mi).

Earthquake statistics

Average number of earthquakes

Based on data from the past 14 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 62 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):
  • Mag. 7 or higher: 0.12 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 8.3 years)
  • Mag. 6 or higher: 0.72 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 1.4 years)
  • Mag. 5 or higher: 14.2 quakes per year
  • Mag. 4 or higher: 60 quakes per year (or 5 quakes per month)
  • Mag. 3 or higher: 61 quakes per year (or 5.1 quakes per month)
  • Mag. 2 or higher: 61 quakes per year (or 5.1 quakes per month)
The area where this quake occurred has a very high level of seismic activity. It has had at least 15 quakes above magnitude 7 since 1900, which suggests that larger earthquakes of this size occur infrequently, probably on average approximately every 5 to 10 years.
