Gareloi volcano (Aleutian Islands): elevated unrest may indicates magma at shallow level

The volcano persistently emits magmatic gases from a fumarole field on the south crater and commonly exhibits low-level seismic activity. These observations suggest the presence of shallow magma and potential interaction with a hydrothermal system. The current increase in seismicity likely reflects a change to the magmatic-hydrothermal system, but it is not clear that the likelihood of a volcanic eruption has increased. The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) will continue to monitor activity to determine if the recent changes are related to influx of new magma or other changes to the magma system.

Gareloi volcano (United States) - Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report for 2 June-8 June 2021 (New Activity / Unrest)
AVO reported that a minor increase in seismicity was first detected at Gareloi on 19 May. Beginning on 27 May the rate and size of small volcanic earthquakes increased and was sustained at that level. On 8 June AVO raised the Aviation Color Code to Yellow and the Volcano Alert Level to Advisory based on seismicity rising above baseline levels. ... Read all
