Gaussgberg is an ice-free conical mountain composed primarily of subglacial eruptive products. No vent has been located and its present morphology is thought to result from glacial and subaerial erosion of a once-larger mountain that was formed about 55,000 years ago (LeMasurier and Thomson 1990).---
