Background
The Gharyan volcanic field is about 3000 km2 in area, but its volcanic structures and products, which include a lava plateau, phonolite domes, and younger small volcanic centers, are relatively thin, at only 350 km3 in volume (Liegeois et al., 2005). Potassium-Argon ages of the youngest volcanics range from 1-12 Ma (Almond, 1974; Liegeois et al., 2005). These volcanic centers are generally basanitic and contain abundant lherzolitic xenoliths (Liegeois et al., 2005).---
