Earthquake statistics

Number of quakes per year

Note:
The apparent increase in the number of quakes is not because global seismic activity has increased, but because the number of seismic networks around the world and their sensitivity to detect smaller quakes has been constantly increasing.
This is most evident if one looks at the number of smaller earthquakes (below magnitude 5). For larger quakes (magnitude 5 or more), the effect disappears after around the 1990s. Since then, the global coverage of earthquake of larger quakes has been nearly complete.

Average number of earthquakes

Based on data from the past 54 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 135 quakes on average per year near Great Sitkin volcano:
  • Mag. 6 or higher: 0.03 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 31.3 years)
  • Mag. 5 or higher: 0.31 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 3.2 years)
  • Mag. 4 or higher: 1.12 quakes per year
  • Mag. 3 or higher: 3.4 quakes per year
  • Mag. 2 or higher: 13.2 quakes per year
  • Mag. 1 or higher: 37 quakes per year (or 3.1 quakes per month)

Great Sitkin volcano (Andreanof Islands, USA) - Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report for 3 April-9 April 2024 (Continuing Activity)

AVO reported that slow lava effusion continued in Great Sitkin's summit crater during 3-9 April. Slightly elevated surface temperatures were identified in satellite images during 2-3 April. Seismicity was low with a few small daily earthquakes recorded by the seismic network; the network was not operational during 8-9 April. ... Read all

Great Sitkin volcano (Andreanof Islands, USA) - Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report for 27 March-2 April 2024 (Continuing Activity)

AVO reported that slow lava effusion continued in Great Sitkin's summit crater during 27 March-2 April. A white steam plume rose above the summit on 27 March; weather clouds obscured or partly obscured satellite and webcam views during most of the week. A radar satellite image acquired on 28 March showed advancement of the active NW lava flow and uplift of the center of the lava flow above the vent. ... Read all
