Mauna Loa volcano (Hawai'i): HVO weekly report

Fr, 13. Mär 2020, 14:14
14:14 PM | VON: MATTHEW
The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) recorded around 156 small-magnitude earthquakes beneath the volcano's upper elevations over the past week. Most of these earthquakes occurred at shallow depths of less than 5 kilometers (~3 miles) below ground level. The strongest even was a magnitude 2.27 in the morning of March 8. This particular earthquake was located in the radial vents west of the summit caldera within the volcano 0.5 km (0.4 miles) above sea level. Last week's flurry just south on known fault structures south of the northeast rift zone is tapering off.

There is still continued slow summit inflation which HVO report is consistent with magma supply to the volcano's shallow storage system. Gas concentrations and fumarole temperatures remain stable.

Mauna Loa caldera, image captured from HVO's MLcam (C) U.S. Geological Survey
HVO recorded around 70 small-magnitude earthquakes beneath the volcano's upper elevations over the past week. Most of these earthquakes occurred at depths of less than 5 kilometers (~3 miles) below ground level. The summit is continually inflating where magma is being supplied to the volcano’s shallow storage region. Gas concentrations and fumarole temperatures are both stable. ... alles lesen

Mauna Loa caldera, image captured from HVO's MLcam (C) U.S. Geological Survey
There have been around 80 recorded small-magnitude earthquakes beneath Mauna Loa over the past week with the strongest measuring magnitude 2.9 in the early morning hours of February 27. Most events occurred at shallow depths of less than 5 kilometers (~3 miles) beneath the surface of the summit and upper flanks of the volcano. There is continuous slow summit inflation which HVO say is “consistent with magma supply to the volcano's shallow storage system.” Gas concentrations ad fumarole temperatures remain stable. ... alles lesen

The location of recorded earthquakes over the past week (C) U.S. Geological Survey
HVO recorded 44 small-magnitude earthquakes beneath Mauna Loa volcano's upper elevations. The strongest was a magnitude-2.2 on the 16th of February, at approximately 7 kilometers (around 4 miles) below the surface. This was deeper than most of the earthquakes which occurred at depths of less than 5 kilometers (around 3 miles) beneath the surface of the volcano. The volcano continues to inflate, due to magma being supplied to the volcano’s shallow storage region. Gas concentrations and fumarole temperatures remain stable. ... alles lesen

Mauna Loa caldera, image captured from HVO's MLcam (C) U.S. Geological Survey
31 small-magnitude earthquakes occurred beneath Mauna Loa over the past week. HVO recorded the strongest earthquake at magnitude 2.9, 13 km (8 miles) deep on February 9. According to HVO this was deeper than most earthquakes from the past week, which occurred less than 5 km (3 miles) deep. There is continued inflation at the summit where magma supply to the volcano’s shallow system continues. alles lesen
