Mayon volcano (Philippines), activity update: new eruption

Mayon volcano started to erupt again on Dec 14. The lava dome in the summit of the steep stratovolcano began to grow again and is producing strombolian and vulcanian explosions as well as incandescent rock avalanches and small pyroclastic flows travelling down up to 3 km the SE side of the volcano.Authorities have raised the alert level to 3 (out of 4) and started to evacuate 50,000 people living in the immediate neighborhood of the volcano.

PHIVOLCS reported that during 14-19 December sulfur dioxide emissions from Mayon fluctuated between 750 and 2,034 tonnes per day. During 15-16 December, detached fragments from lava accumulating in the summit crater traveled as far as 4 km down the SE-flank Bonga-Buyuan gully, and lava flows traveled 700-800 m. According to news articles, PHIVOLCS reported that on 11 December an explosion from Mayon was detected by the seismic network. On 14 December, incandescence emanated from the lava dome in the summit crater and incandescent material traveled as far as 3 km down the S and SE flanks.
