We are happy to announce that visiting Nyiragongo is now again possible. With the help of EU money, the Virunga National Park has been reorganized and now open again, after a long pause due to the civil war. For those who dream about visiting fascinating Nyiragongo volcano, we offer two group departures in August 2010 and Jan 2011 to allow a small group accompanied by a volcanologist from our team to stay 3 full days on the volcano.

Nyiragongo volcano (DR Congo) - Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report for 6 May-12 May 2009 (New Activity / Unrest)
According to a news article on 8 May, the air in the city of Goma, 18 km S of Nyiragongo, was thick with "volcanic dust." Residents reported seeing incandescent lava flowing from the summit crater at night. The article also stated that the scientist-in-charge of Goma Volcano Observatory (GVO) reported that significantly increased temperatures were measured around Nyiragongo and that larger-than-usual plumes of "volcanic dust" were being ejected.
