Earthquake statistics

Number of quakes per year

Note:
The apparent increase in the number of quakes is not because global seismic activity has increased, but because the number of seismic networks around the world and their sensitivity to detect smaller quakes has been constantly increasing.
This is most evident if one looks at the number of smaller earthquakes (below magnitude 5). For larger quakes (magnitude 5 or more), the effect disappears after around the 1990s. Since then, the global coverage of earthquake of larger quakes has been nearly complete.

Average number of earthquakes

Based on data from the past 54 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 97 quakes on average per year near Pelée volcano:
  • Mag. 5 or higher: 0.05 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 22.2 years)
  • Mag. 4 or higher: 0.4 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 2.5 years)
  • Mag. 3 or higher: 0.9 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 1.1 years)
  • Mag. 2 or higher: 4.1 quakes per year
  • Mag. 1 or higher: 20.5 quakes per year

Mt Pelée volcano (Martinique Island): small tremors continue as signs of volcanic unrest

Location of earthquakes under Mt Pelée during the past 14 days
The volcano remains restless. Seismic activity continues to be slightly above background levels, showing that the volcano might be potentially preparing itself for new activity in a medium-term future (months or years from now). ... Read all

Pelee volcano (Martinique, France) - Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report for 24 March-30 March 2021 (New Activity / Unrest)

L'Observatoire Volcanologique et Sismologique de Martinique (OVSM) reported that seismicity at Pelée increased during 19-26 March. The seismic network recorded at least 55 high-frequency volcano-tectonic earthquakes with magnitudes less than or equal to 1, located at depths between 1.7 km below sea level and 1 km above sea level. The Alert Level remained at Yellow (the second lowest level on a four-color scale). ... Read all
