Sabancaya volcano (Peru) activity update: continuing frequent ash explosions

The volcano continues to produce frequent small to moderate explosive eruptions, with ash plumes rising up to 2-3 km above the crater.

Peru's Geophysical Institute (IGP) reported that the last week of 2018, activity of Sabancaya volcano was marked by a moderate eruptive activity, with an average of 23 explosions per day, and plumes of gas and ash reaching a maximum height of 3,300 meters above the crater before dissipating in up to 30 km in the relevant wind directions.
Seismicity has been marked by long-period earthquakes (related to internal fluid movements) as well as hybrid earthquakes associated with the rise of magma.
Weak thermal anomalies are present in the summit area.
