Earthquake statistics

Number of quakes per year

Note:
The apparent increase in the number of quakes is not because global seismic activity has increased, but because the number of seismic networks around the world and their sensitivity to detect smaller quakes has been constantly increasing.
This is most evident if one looks at the number of smaller earthquakes (below magnitude 5). For larger quakes (magnitude 5 or more), the effect disappears after around the 1990s. Since then, the global coverage of earthquake of larger quakes has been nearly complete.

Average number of earthquakes

Based on data from the past 14 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 8.8 quakes on average per year near Sakurajima volcano:
  • Mag. 6 or higher: 0.02 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 62.5 years)
  • Mag. 5 or higher: 0.09 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 11.6 years)
  • Mag. 4 or higher: 0.27 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 3.8 years)
  • Mag. 3 or higher: 2.7 quakes per year
  • Mag. 2 or higher: 9.3 quakes per year
  • Mag. 1 or higher: 17.3 quakes per year

Aira volcano (Kyushu, Japan) - Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report for 20 March-26 March 2024 (Continuing Activity)

JMA reported ongoing eruptive activity at Minamidake Crater (Aira Caldera's Sakurajima volcano) during 18-25 March. An explosion at 1952 on 18 March produced an ash plume that rose 1.2 km above the crater rim and drifted SE and ejected large blocks 800-1,100 m from the vent. Very small eruptions and nighttime incandescence were observed at the summit crater during other days of the report period. ... Read all

Aira volcano (Kyushu, Japan) - Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report for 13 March-19 March 2024 (Continuing Activity)

JMA reported ongoing eruptive activity at Minamidake Crater (Aira Caldera's Sakurajima volcano) during 11-18 March with nighttime crater incandescence. Sulfur dioxide emissions were extremely high, averaging 3,100 tons per day on 12 March. During an overflight on 13 March emissions obscured views of Minamidake Crater, though observers noted no changes at the either the Showa Crater geothermal area or around the flanks of both craters. ...
