MODIS hot spot data (past 7 days) for Sakurajima volcano (ModVolc, Univ. Hawaii)
On 21 August, the volcano had at least 8 (!) vulcanian-type explosions with ash plumes rising up to 15,000 ft (4,5 km) altitude that often drifted over the bay and Kagoshima city, causing ash fall there. Some of the explosions can be seen on the following time-lapse video. The volcano has been in an elevated state of activity during the past weeks. A significant hot spot is visible on MODIS data, suggesting that magma levels are high in the crater and the presence of significant amounts of still hot fresh deposits on the flanks. A very large vulcanian explosion, one of the largest during this year occurred yesterday morning. It produced a mushroom shaped ash column that rose to about 20,000 ft (6 km) altitude that drifted over the Kagoshima town where ash fall occurred. Read more...

The volcano has been stepping up its activity again over the past 2 days. Yesterday alone, at least 6 explosions were registered by VAAC Tokyo, with plumes reaching up to 11,000 ft (3,4 km) altitude.

Activity remains high - explosions occur at more-than-usual frequency from the Showa crater. An eruption on 27 July produced an ash plume rising to 18,000 ft (5.7 km) altitude, i.e. an eruption plume about 4.5 km tall.

The IAVECI 2013 conference over, activity has dropped a bit, it seems. The volcano still has a few vulcanian explosions per day, but smaller in size, and phases of near-continuous ash emissions have become a bit weaker and shorter when observed last night.

Activity remains elevated. During most of the time, the volcano produces (usually silent) near-continuous ash puffs that reach varying heights of a few hundred meters, as well as intermittent vulcanian explosions with plume heights often exceeding 3 km. Often, the plumes from this activity merge into a continuous one that has been drifting into easterly directions where light to moderate ash fall occurs. Read more...
