Vulcanian explosion from Sakurajima this morning (Tarumizu webcam)
After about a week with fewer (and on some days no) recorded explosions, a new surge of stronger activity began yesterday. A vulcanian explosion this morning produced an ash plume rising to 11,000 ft (3.4 km) altitude.

Activity seems to increase and decrease in cycles of approximately a week's length. After the series of stronger explosions on 24-25 Nov, the past days have been calmer with fewer and less intense explosions (1-2 per day, ash plumes to 8,000 ft).

After a short phase of weaker activity, the volcano began to erupt more violently yesterday with a series of powerful explosions that sent ash plumes up to 15,000 ft (4,5 km). Near-constant ash emissions have been taking place from the Showa crater. Read more...

The past days have been relatively calm at the volcano with only infrequent and smaller explosions and less ash emission, compared to the intense phase of activity during 13-15 November.

VAAC Tokyo reports continuous ash emissions and some relatively large explosions with plumes reaching 12,000 ft (3.6 km) altitude last evening.

Since the larger explosions on 27 Oct, the volcano has been a bit calmer with on average 2 explosions per day ejecting ash plumes to 7-10,000 ft (2-3 km) altitude.

Eruption from Sakurajima yesterday
The volcano had at least 6 vulcanian explosions yesterday. The largest (at 08:09 local time this morning) sent an ash plume to 15,000 ft (4.5 km) altitude. Read more...
