Santa María / Santiaguito volcano (Guatemala) activity update

Following the partial collapse of the upper part of the Caliente lava dome on 9 May, the activity of Santiaguito has remained relatively low. It consisted mainly in degassing, sometimes interrupted by weak to moderate explosions, and continuing rockfalls in the upper part of the dome.

INSIVUMEH reported that on 22 May a lahar, the second since the 9 May eruption at Santa María's Santiaguito lava-dome complex, carried blocks up to 1 m in diameter as well as tree trunks. The lahar was 15 m wide and 2 m deep and had a strong sulfur odor. Santiaguito volcano (Guatemala): large mud flows triggered by rainfall
