Earthquake statistics

Number of quakes per year

Note:
The apparent increase in the number of quakes is not because global seismic activity has increased, but because the number of seismic networks around the world and their sensitivity to detect smaller quakes has been constantly increasing.
This is most evident if one looks at the number of smaller earthquakes (below magnitude 5). For larger quakes (magnitude 5 or more), the effect disappears after around the 1990s. Since then, the global coverage of earthquake of larger quakes has been nearly complete.

Average number of earthquakes

Based on data from the past 54 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 29.1 quakes on average per year near Semisopochnoi volcano:
  • Mag. 5 or higher: 0.12 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 8.5 years)
  • Mag. 4 or higher: 0.99 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 1 years)
  • Mag. 3 or higher: 3.1 quakes per year
  • Mag. 2 or higher: 8.2 quakes per year
  • Mag. 1 or higher: 19.6 quakes per year

Semisopochnoi volcano (Aleutian Islands, USA) - Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report for 2 August-8 August 2023 (Continuing Activity)

AVO reported that the last time possible explosions were detected at Semisopochnoi's Mount Young in monitoring data was 25 April and the last ash emission occurred on 5 May. Since then, earthquake activity has been low and steaming from the N crater continued. On 3 August the Volcano Alert Level was lowered to Normal (the lowest level on a four-level scale) and the Aviation Color Code was lowered to Green (the lowest color on a four-color scale). ...
