Spurr Volcano Eruptions

The first occurrred on 27 June and produced an eruption column of 9 km and deposited a large narrow ash fall layer of more then 200 km to the ESE.
The second, stronger explosion occurred on 18 August a stronger eruption occurred and produced a column of 13.5 km height. The airport of Anchorage 130 km E of Spurr was closed and residents in the fall-out area of the ash were advised to stay indoors.
On 21 August, the plume from the explosion had reached more than 3500 km length and extended from central Saskatchewan, to central Alberta, SW British Columbia, and into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of northern California.
A third brief and smaller eruption occurred on 16-17 September. It produced ash fall from communities out as far as Beaver Creek near the Canadian border at almost 600 km distance.

The 1992 explosive eruption and its ash deposit are one of the best documented larger explosive eruptions in modern times. Its deposit was exceptionally well sampled by AVO staff, who published the brilliant volume:
