Stromboli volcano photos: lava flow August 2014
After two months of impressive and increasing activity at the summit vents, including several short-lived lava overflows, the magma inside the upper conduits breached the lower flank of the NE crater on the morning of 7 August, causing a massive surge of lava running down the Sciara. Within less than 20 minutes, it reached the sea, for the first time since 2007.
The volcano's plumbing system being "pierced" at a lower point than the summit, the rising magma continued to pour out from the new vent forming a beautiful lava flow. We visited the volcano during 8-12 August:
