The Tokyo VAAC reported an explosion at Suwanosejima on 15 September. An explosion on 17 September produced an ash plume that rose to an altitude of 2.7 km (9,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted W.
Based on a pilot observation and satellite data, the Tokyo VAAC reported that on 31 August ash plume from Suwanosejima rose to an altitude of 1.5 km (5,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted E.

After about a week of relative calm, the volcano's activity - probably strombolian explosions from Ontake crater - has again picked since last night.

Based on JMA notices and satellite-image analyses, the Tokyo VAAC reported that during 25-26 and 28-29 August explosions at Suwanosejima often generated ash plumes that rose to altitudes of 0.9-2.4 km (3,000-8,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted W, SW, and SE.

Activity has been more intermittent over the past days, but occasional (presumably strombolian) explosions continue to occur, producing small ash plumes that rise up to approx. 2 km altitude and quickly disperse.

The volcano's activity has picked up again. Since yesterday, webcam images show constant red glow and intense degassing as well as intermittent ash emissions some of which have also been reported by Tokyo VAAC.

Ash plume from Suwanose-jima yesterday
Judging from recent webcam imagery, activity has decreased again at the volcano although the On-take crater continues to produce a significant steam plume and occasional ash emissions, but much less vigorous than earlier this month. Only week glow if any can be seen at night.

A new eruptive phase has begun at the volcano. Near-constant ash emissions of several hundred meters height are currently visible from the volcano's On-take crater.
