Erta Ale volcano (Ethiopia): overflowing lava lake 18-19 Jan 2017: videos
All videos copyright: Paul Reichert
After the spectacular boiling-over phase on 17 Jan, the lava lake drops during 18 Jan and rose again during the next day, producing new overflows. The activity was accompanied by violent spattering resembling continuous strombolian explosions, which also built a new cone.
The following videos show this activity, which was then followed, a mere day later, by the flank eruption 2-4 km down the rift zone, and the collapse of the summit lava lake and much of the shield it built up. The places shown in the videos now longer exist!
