Higher and bigger actively lava dome on the edge of the 1979 lava dome (image: @scarlett_jazmin/twitter)
The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC) in collaboration with geologists prof. Richard Robertson, Dr. Thomas Christopher and Dr. Adam Stinton did an aerial flights over the volcano to observe actively growing lava dome. They were able to take thermal images of heat distribution, gas emission and dimension measurement of the new dome.
The actively extruded lava dome area located on the edge of the old lava dome from 1979 continues to grow and is higher and bigger than reported in the last update. It continues to grow laterally towards the east and west. [less]

Glowing avalanches from Merapi's lava dome last night (image: Andi Rosadi / VolcanoDiscovery Indonesia)
According to the volcano observatory, the new lava dome was first visible emerging behind the crater breach on 4 January. During 4-7 January, 19 incandescent avalanches were observed; they traveled as far as 800 m downhill, but the risk of larger avalanches increases as the dome grows.
Deformation of the volcanic edifice continued as well: distance shortening was measured between separate points in the northwestern part of the volcano, reaching rates of 15 cm per day. The reason for this contraction could be the removal of magma from internal conduits into the dome. More than 1,300 residents have been temporarily relocated from their homes in threatened areas to evacuation centers. [less]

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) reported that over the past few days, the western fissure vent within Halema‘uma‘u has escalated from weak spattering to continuous fountaining supplying lava to an open channel that was pouring into the lava lake. A spatter cone has built around both the fountaining vent and its turbulent outflow channel down to the lava lake.
The current lava lake depth is about 196 m (643 ft) with the floating islands inside.

According to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO), a few floating islands formed in the lava lake. The largest island is about 250 m (820 ft) long, 135 m (440 ft) wide and 20 m (65 ft) tall. On 1 January the islands’ edges were about 6 m (20 ft) above the lava lake surface. On 4 Janury the whole island had risen by about 2 m (6-7 ft). The island has rotated and moved both eastward and westward since its formation on the first day of the eruption. On 6 January at about 22:30 local time the island stalled in rotation and movement.
Webcam imagery and eyewitness observations indicate that it formed through a combination of lava interacting with the lake water, early lava flows, and tephra erupted from the early highest fountains. Islands have been observed in Kīlauea lava lakes for more than 100 years. The apparent buoyancy changes of the island may be due to a density increase in the lava lake as gases escape or sloughing off of island material from the subsurface. [less]

Glow at the summit crater associated with incandescent avalanches at Merapi volcano (image: @OysteinVolcano/twitter)
The block-and-ash flows continue to descend and caused incandescent avalanches that slid down along the slopes as glowing rock falls reaching Krasak river about 800 m long.
Passive emissions of steam and ash continue from the summit vent that rose 65 ft-328 ft (20 m-100 m) above the summit. [less]

Effusive-explosive eruption of the volcano has been increasing during the past days confirmed by the INSIVUMEH volcano observatory. Read more...
A new effusive eruption has been producing two lava flows that started to descend slowly from a vents on the northern flanks, currently about 50 m and 200 m long. New vents are eruptive fissures. The lava flow on the southwestern slope remains active, currently about 550 m long.
A moderate-to-strong eruptive episode of strombolian explosions is now in progress at the volcano's Mackenney summit crater characterized by higher-than-usual dense ash plumes that rose to estimated 3 km altitude as can be seen in the video recorded below. [less]

During the past 48 hours, the lava dome in the summit crater produced a series of glowing avalanches from its flanks, sign that new magma is arriving into the dome, causing it to grow.
The lava dome's rims are now almost touching the breach in the crater, which means that very soon it could generate very dangerous glowing avalanches (hot pyroclastic flows) onto the outer slopes of the volcano. [less]

Over the past several days, seismic activity from the Merapi volcano – Indonesia's most active – has been increasing significantly, suggesting that a more intense phase of volcanic activity is on its way. Read more...Indonesia's volcanologists recorded a record number of volcanic earthquakes under the volcano, namely 720 quakes yesterday and 680 the day before, both of which represented new records in recent months. The average for the month of November had been around 30 before these record figures. It is particularly worrying that many of the newly detected tremors may be caused by rock-breaking magma which has the power to create new magma conduits or widen existing ones inside the volcano itself. These tremors are known as volcano-tectonic quakes and can be quite dangerous.
In response to the latest activity, local authorities have extended the existing state of emergency for Merapi by one more month. As many as 240 people, recently evacuated from homes lying in particularly dangerous places around the slopes of the volcano, will need to be more patient before being allowed to return home. [less]
