Yasur volcano (Vanuatu), activity update:strong eruptions, ash cloud reaching 1.8 km
Tue, 1 Jun 2010, 06:27 |
Yasur's strong activity is sending ash clouds to up to 1.8 km elevation and causing problems with ash fall in surrounding villages. Variuous media are talking about "giant ash clouds", that could disrupt flights across the Pacific.
While it's understandeable that the trauma of the Icelandic eruption of Eyafjallajökull volcano in April has news reporters now on high alert about potential ash clouds threatening flights, it is exaggerated to classify Yasur's eruption as "giant" (so far). Local flights to and from Tanna, might very well be affected, but however impressive and violent Yasur's strombolian eruptions might seem for now, an ash cloud reaching mere 2 km has certainly no potential to seriously disrupt international trans-Pacific flights.
No evacuations have been reported, but the access to the crater rim (now frequently hit by bombs) remains closed.
