Two powerful explosions occurred at the volcano on 20 Nov - apparently with no warning - and produced an ash plume that rose to almost 10 km altitude and drifted more than 200 km to the east before dissipating. No damages were reported (there are no significant settlements nearby), but the ash plume was dangerous for N-America - Asia air traffic routes.
There is no active monitoring on this volcano and the nature of the explosions is unknown, in particular whether they involved fresh magma or were only driven by overheated steam inside the conduits (phreatic activity).
Zhupanovsky has been having intermittent explosions since 2013, often at long intervals of several months. In July 2015, a part of its southern flank of its active cone Priemysh collapsed.
