Kanlaon volcano (Philippines) - Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report for 9 February-15 February 2022 (Continuing Activity)

Wed, 16 Feb 2022, 12:44 | BY: VN
PHIVOLCS issued a special notice for Kanlaon on 9 February, noting localized earthquake activity on the lower NW flank. There were 11 very shallow earthquakes, with local magnitudes of M 0.9-2.1, recorded by the seismic network between 2012 on 8 February and 0900 on 9 February. Ground deformation data from continuous GPS and tilt measurements indicated slight inflation of the middle and upper flanks of the volcano since mid-October 2021; EDM and electronic tilt data reflected short-term deflation on the SE flank since December 2021 and January 2022, respectively.
The Alert Level remained at 1 (on a scale of 0-5) and PHIVOLCS reminded the public to remain outside of the 4-km-radius Permanent Danger Zone.

Canlaon volcano (Central Philippines) activity update: low level unrest

Volcanic activity at Canlaon volcano continues at low levels and has not shown significant variations recently. According to the recent bulletins released by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the Canlaon volcano monitoring network has detected eleven (11) volcanic earthquakes during the last 7 days. Moderate emissions of steam-laden plumes were observed to rise 300m before drifting northwest. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions were recorded at 96 tonnes/day last 8 May 2021. The lower and middle slopes of the volcano have been observed to be slightly inflating since June 2020 based on continuous GPS and electronic tilt measurements. This may indicate hydrothermal, tectonic, or deep-seated magmatic processes ongoing underneath the surface. ... Read all
