Three distinct thermal anomalies in the summit crater of Michael on Saunders Island were identified in a satellite image acquired on 24 December. Satellite images from 29 November and 2 December showed similar anomalies.

Satellite data acquired during 1 January-9 July periodically (a few times a month) showed volcanic plumes originating from Michael on Saunders Island. A thermal anomaly was last detected on 3 April 2018.

A new eruption is likely underway at the remote volcano (also called like the whole island, Saunders). Since mid October, prominent heat signals coming from the summit of Michael cone can be retrieved on satellite data, but there are no direct (visual or other) observations.

A hot spot has been detected on Saunders Island on MODIS satellite data on 30 Sep. According to the
South Sandwich Islands Volcano Monitoring Blog, this is most likely an indicator of volcanic activity on Mount Michael volcano.

One of the remotest active volcanoes is in eruption again. In a satellite image from 26 August 2015 obtained from the NASA's Earth Explorer program, the east flank of Mount Michael volcano can be seen stained grey which strongly indicates that an eruption took place.

The MODIS TERRA and AQUA satellites detected 4 thermal anomalies at Michael on 14 November suggesting that some significant activity has started there.

A thermal hotspot was visible today on MODIS satellite imagery, suggesting that new activity is taking place, possibly a small lava lake forming as during periods of activity in recent years.

The first MODVOLC alerts at Mount Michael since May 2003 recently began, indicating an increased level of activity in the island's summit crater (and presumed lava lake). The alerts occurred on 3, 5, and 6 October.
