Lewotolo volcano (Lomblen Island, Indonesia): increased activity, 500 people evacuated
Mon, 9 Jan 2012, 00:01 | BY: T
The remote Lewotolo stratovolcano on Lomblen island in Indonesia is getting more and more active, with reports of "black columns of smoke" coming out from its crater, which probably translates to first ash eruptions happening. "Rumbling sounds are heard around the mountain" and a strong smell of sulfur is noticed. Now in the rainy season, the main risk will likely be lahars.
Jakarta Post reports that about 500 people residing near Mount Lewotolo have evacuated their homes voluntarily, and that providing shelters for them is difficult.
The alert status of Lewotolo has been raised to 3 (out of 4).
