Stromboli volcano (Eolian Islands, Italy) update: regular strombolian explosions

Strombolian eruption from the easternmost vent last night (image: LGS thermal webcam from Rocchette (ROC)
The easternmost vent, which forms a prominent cone, had the most vigorous eruptions roughly every 15-20 minutes, with ejections of glowing bombs to 150-200 m height that fell back on the entire outside slopes of the cone and sometimes rolled down the Sciara.
The westernmost vent had slightly more frequent, but weaker strombolian explosions and a vent in the central area erupted more rarely, approx. every 30-45 minutes.
Other vents regularly produced small dense ash plumes without visible incandescent material. Only very weak glow could be seen from the crater terrace in the intervals between explosions, suggesting that lava spattering is absent or only very intermittent and weak.

INGV reported that during 28 June-4 July activity at Stromboli was characterized by ongoing explosive activity from three vents in Area N (North Crater area) and four vents in Area C-S (South-Central Crater area). Explosions from the N1 vent (Area N) ejected lapilli and bombs 150 m high, and produced minor ash emissions. Explosions at N2 vents (Area N) averaged 4-10 events per hour and ejected material 80 m high; spattering was intense on 28 June. ... Read all
