A small ash eruption occurred yesterday evening. An ash plume rose to approx 2 km altitude.
Tokyo VAAC released ash advisories for Suwanosejima during 3-4 and 9 September based on JMA reports. Ash drifted NE and N at 1,800-5,500 m (6,000-18,000 ft) a.s.l. on 3 September.

The volcano has entered a more active phase again. Several (strombolian-type) explosions and phases of constant ash venting have occurred since yesterday, producing ash plumes of 1-2 km height.
During 28 August-1 September, the Tokyo VAAC reported eruptions at Suwanosejima. Ash plumes rose 1.8-2.7 km (6,000-9,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted E, SE, S, and NE.

During 18-20 June, JMA reported explosions at Suwanosejima. Ash plumes were not visible in satellite images. Explosions occurred at 1346 on 18 June, 0834 on 19 June with a plume drifting E, and at 0033 on 20 June.

Glow from Suwanosejima volcano at night (JMA)
After some weeks of no or less visible activity, the volcano has again become more active and bright glow is visible above the crater at night, suggesting the near-continuous small strombolian-type explosions or perhaps even the presence of a small lava lake.

Explosions have become less frequent, but still occur from time to time. This morning, an ash plume from an eruption could be seen on the webcam. VAAC Tokyo estimated the height of the ash plume that drifted SSE at approx 3 km altitude.

Ash emission from Suwanose-Jima volcano this morning
The remote volcano south of Kyushu remains very active, although seems to have calmed down a bit. The following video of the past 24 hours at the volcano shows phases near-continuous steam and ash emissions as well as some smaller discrete explosions. Ash plumes were reported to reach up to 4,000 ft (1.2 km) altitude.
