An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred only 9 minutes ago 41 miles south of Shungnak, Alaska, United States, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 4.2 miles beneath the epicenter near Shungnak, Northwest Arctic County, Alaska, USA, around noon on Friday 22 January 2021 at 1:06 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.1 as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Shungnak (pop. 270, 41 miles away), Kobuk (pop. 160, 41 miles away), and Huslia (pop. 280, 44 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
