Earthquake statistics

Number of quakes per year

Note:
The apparent increase in the number of quakes is not because global seismic activity has increased, but because the number of seismic networks around the world and their sensitivity to detect smaller quakes has been constantly increasing.
This is most evident if one looks at the number of smaller earthquakes (below magnitude 5). For larger quakes (magnitude 5 or more), the effect disappears after around the 1990s. Since then, the global coverage of earthquake of larger quakes has been nearly complete.

Average number of earthquakes

Based on data from the past 54 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 12.9 quakes on average per year near Hakone volcano:
  • Mag. 6 or higher: 0.03 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 31.3 years)
  • Mag. 5 or higher: 0.14 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 7 years)
  • Mag. 4 or higher: 1.06 quakes per year
  • Mag. 3 or higher: 4.4 quakes per year
  • Mag. 2 or higher: 12.4 quakes per year
  • Mag. 1 or higher: 34.1 quakes per year (or 2.8 quakes per month)

Hakoneyama volcano (Honshu, Japan) - Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report for 2 October-8 October 2019 (Continuing Activity)

On 7 October JMA lowered the Alert Level for Hakoneyama to 1 (the lowest level on a 5-level scale), noting that the number of volcanic earthquakes had decreased to background levels after a spike in seismicity was recorded in May. Inflation had been detected but had become almost stagnant after late August. Fumaroles in the Owakudani hot springs area continued to be active, with gas-and-steam plumes rising 100-400 m above their vents. ... Read all

Hakoneyama volcano (Honshu, Japan) - Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report for 22 May-28 May 2019 (New Activity / Unrest)

JMA reported that the number of earthquakes at Hakoneyama increased on 18 May and remained elevated through 27 May. The epicenters were centered around the W bank of Lake Ashinoko and around Komagatake. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) data continued to indicate a trend of inflation. ... Read all
